Designing Hospitality through Atmosphere

Hospitality spaces today are defined by how they feel as much as how they function. From vibrant social settings to calm, restorative environments, design plays a central role in shaping atmosphere, guiding behaviour and supporting meaningful interactions.

Zoning through colour, texture and tactility

At Milan Design Week 2026, Bar Adrenalina explored this shift by rethinking the bar as a multi-sensory environment. Rather than a static setting, the space was designed as a dynamic and people-centred experience, where form, colour and materiality worked together to support different moods and ways of being.

Divided into distinct zones, the interior translated atmosphere into spatial design: vibrant areas encouraging social interaction, quieter settings inviting relaxation, and contemplative spaces dedicated to reflection. This zoning highlights an essential principle in hospitality design: the ability to accommodate diverse needs within one cohesive environment.

Strong, saturated colours, from warm reds and oranges to deep blues and vivid greens, help define each zone, while textiles play a key role in softening these contrasts and creating a cohesive overall expression. Texture and tactility add depth, ensuring that even bold environments feel comfortable and inviting.

Materials that support versatility

Contemporary hospitality interiors demand versatility. Furniture and surfaces need to accommodate a wide range of uses - from quick stops to longer stays, from social gatherings to moments of retreat.

Soft, upholstered elements help create this flexibility. They introduce comfort and informality, while also shaping how people move, gather and linger in a space. When combined with resilient, high-performance textiles, these elements support both intensive use and long-term durability, making them well suited for dynamic hospitality settings.

In high-traffic environments, durability is essential. Textiles must withstand frequent use while maintaining their colour, structure and appearance over time. Materials with strong abrasion resistance, colourfastness and easy maintenance properties ensure that spaces remain both functional and visually appealing, even under continuous use.

Designing for sensory experiences

Beyond the visual, hospitality design engages multiple senses. Acoustics, texture and spatial composition all contribute to how a space is perceived and remembered.

In Bar Adrenalina, sound was explored as an integrated design element, capturing the interactions within the space and translating them into part of the overall experience. This highlights how materials not only shape appearance, but also influence comfort and atmosphere – from sound absorption to the tactile qualities that invite touch.

Textiles play a subtle but important role in this sensory layer, helping to balance acoustics, reduce noise and create a more comfortable environment.
